Full disclosure: I listened to this as an audio book. I enjoyed the narration, but feel that I could have become even more engrossed in the details had I read it myself. It isn’t often that I want to read a book directly after listening to it, but the details of this book make me want to sink deeper into the story. I don’t sink deep enough with audio.

I highly enjoyed Child of the Daystar. This is the first fantasy novel I’ve read where the main character isn’t human, vampire, wizard, or elf. I wondered if reading from the viewpoint of a lizard would be distracting, but it wasn’t. The way the author wove the physical attributes of Raz into the story was perfect. Bryce O’Connor’s description of scales, tail, and wings were done so well that I can vividly see and feel them in my mind.

Raz’s story starts almost at his beginning and takes us on his journey of becoming a one of a kind character. (view spoiler)[I will say that I found it odd that more people in the story weren’t surprised to see a giant lizard walking around among them as he is supposedly the first and only to do so. Yes, there are some reactions, but I wanted just a little more fright and/or shock. (hide spoiler)] Raz’s struggle of good vs. bad, humanity vs. animal created a great deal of depth to the character.

I’m glad the second book is already available and the third is set to release next month. I’m expecting myself to fly through them with enjoyment.
