Review: Ready Player One by Ernest Cline

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Ready Player One is one of the best books I’ve read in a long time. I am a huge gaming, tech geek from the 80s.

This book was recommended to me several times. I was told, you love the 80s, read it! I was told, you love RPG games, read it! So, I read the synopsis several times and had no interest. I wasn’t going to read this book. Then, I made a bet with a friend. I hate being wrong.

I connected with the tech geek that this main character was. I connected with the awkward social experiences he had. I connected with the way he described his “online” self to be the real him. I rooted for him at every step. I wanted him to get everything and have the perfect ending. I don’t love perfect endings where everything wraps up in a pretty bow, but that is exactly what I wanted for this character. I can’t say that happened.

I hated being wrong. Hated losing the bet and having to admit to my friend that I was wrong. But, I did it with a huge smile on my face because I couldn’t hide how much I enjoyed this book.
