Review: The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

The Name of the Wind (The Kingkiller Chronicle, #1)The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I really enjoyed this book and couldn’t put it down.

I will say that it didn’t have me hooked from the start, but it didn’t take me long to really get into it.

Kvoth is a legendary hero. His name is known in every town. His stories are told in streets and taverns. His exploits are sung about in popular songs. This book is his story, told by him, about his life. It begins with his life as a well loved member of his family’s troupe. When tragedy strikes, Kvoth is alone in the world. The life he follows takes him on many journeys, often stuck in life or death situations.

I always enjoy a book where the hero is not perfect. I enjoyed reading along as Kvoth figured out how the world around him truly worked. I laughed out loud, found myself attached to many characters, and wondered at the good vs evil plot elements.

My rating is based on this book in the series alone. It is incomplete without the other two as the story continues. Each book tells (I assume) about 1/3 of Kvoth’s life. I have read the second book and enjoyed it as well. However, book 1 was published in 2007 and book 2 was published in 2011. Had I done my research and found out that book 3 is yet to be released, I would have waited to read this. This is not a knock on the author as I know nothing of him other than his wonderful stories. But, I am an impatient reader with any series and have been known to wait years before starting a series just so that I don’t have to stop and wait.

Even with the wait on the third book, I would recommend this book as it is a great read.
